PreK Press
October 23 - November 6
HALLOWEEN: What fun we all had on Halloween! The children looked absolutely adorable in their Halloween costumes! We were very proud of them and extremely impressed with how well they marched around campus while “taking in the sights” at the same time. Thanks for your help with costumes and having the children ready to go! Special thanks to all who contributed food, drinks, and goodies to our special Halloween celebrations. We appreciate your help and generosity.
FALL FESTIVAL: Please join our school community for the TCS Fall Festival. It is sure to be a wonderful time for everyone! It is tomorrow - Friday, November 7th - from from 3:15 - 5:00. For your convenience we have attached the required student participation checklist to this newsletter. Please fill it out tonight and be sure to bring it to the classroom tomorrow morning. You can send it in with the suggested donation or you can pay at the door.
BRIDGES: We continue to learn more and more about bridges and are encouraging the children to be observant as they travel around to see how many bridges they can find and if they can identify what type they are. Their bridge related vocabulary is increasing significantly as they learn words such as beam, arch, suspension, deck, span, piers, foundation, cable, tower, anchor, and approach. We continue to work on related activities in class and engage in MANY conversations about bridges. Stay tuned for more...
TCS CAN VAN COLLECTION: TCS is continuing to collect cans and other non-perishable foods to help fill up the TCS CAN VAN. All food collected will be donated to area soup kitchens. We have been counting the cans in class and are hoping to get to a “really big” number. Your help, as always, is greatly appreciated. There is a container for PreK donations in the classroom.
THANKSGIVING VACATION: TCS will be closed Wednesday, November 26th through Sunday, November 30th for the Thanksgiving holiday.
FALL NATURE WALK: The PreKers went on their fall nature walk with Mrs. Johnson and Ms. Smelser last week. The weather was beautiful as they headed out on the Blue Trail. Led by Mrs. Johnson, the children made their way through the leaves, followed the Blue Trail and practiced their observational skills. They saw many things including trees, colorful leaves, rocks, sticks, tree roots, a great big beech tree that looks like an elephant’s foot, a burl, a spider web, a drey, acorns, lichen, and moss. They stopped at a dry stream bed and drew a hypothetical picture of a bridge that could be used to cross over the stream when it is filled with water. They ended their walk by sitting on the “whale watch” (one component to our ropes course) and reflecting on all they had seen. They will be going on the trails again in the winter and the spring for additional opportunities to observe nature close by and look for similarities and differences between the seasons.
READING BUDDIES MINI-FEAST: One of the most treasured PreK traditions is our annual Mini-Thanksgiving Feast with Reading Buddies. It is scheduled for Friday, November 21st and we will be posting a special sign-up sheet outside the classroom for anyone who is interested and able to help provide goodies. The feast will take place in the cafeteria at about 9:00 when the PreKers and fourth graders will come together for about an hour of special snacks, a story, and our Reading Buddies song. Please note that it is very possible that your child will not eat much lunch that day due to the expanded snack, so don’t be surprised if their lunch boxes come home with lots of food still in them! Also please note that you should NOT send in their regular snack that day.
FLU VACCINES: This is a reminder to those of you who have not yet had a chance to get your child up to date with required vaccines that all children in PreK need to have the specified vaccines by December 31st. For those who need it, the information sheet is attached to this newsletter. Please contact Laura Fucci in the nurse’s office (ext. 111) if you have any questions.
HOLIDAY PROGRAM: Even though it is several weeks away, please put Friday, December 19th on your calendar. This is the day of TCS Holiday Program. All children participate and all parents are strongly encouraged to attend. Please watch for additional information.
