March 5th-April 2nd

PreK Press
March 5 - April 2

WELCOME BACK:  It is always wonderful to return to school after vacation and watch the children reconnect so quickly with each other and resume their school routines with such confidence and enthusiasm.  We hope you all had time to relax, warm up and re-energize!

BEARS:  The PreKers are very excited to be studying bears.  We began last week by asking the essential question: What do we know about bears?  The children then shared their knowledge willingly as we created a list of their ideas that we are continuing to add to daily.  There is so much to learn about brown bears, polar bears, American black bears, Asiatic black bears, Sloth bears, Sun bears, and Spectacled bears!  The children have painted bears at the easel, created a class bear mural, made bears out of construction paper, drawn trees for their forest, have painted and cut out “jointed” bears, are using bears with the tree blocks, using bear count and sorts for classifying, in addition to learning some bear poems and songs. They will be participating in more bear related activities next week and we will need a little help from you (don’t worry - it will be easy).  Please  read on for further instructions.

CALLING ALL BEARS:  AKA - WE NEED YOUR HELP NEXT WEEK:  To help us  learn more about bears, we have some special activities planned for next week and we need your help in reminding your children to bring the following items to school:

  1. Tuesday, April 7th - Bring in the smallest bear you can find

     2)  Wednesday, April 8th - Bring in your favorite stuffed bear.

     3)  Thursday, April 9th - Wear clothing with as many pockets as you can find.
(Jeans are fine for that day)

30 BEAR BOOK CHALLENGE:
The PreKers are very excited to be participating in our 30 bear book challenge as we share both fiction and nonfiction books during our reading opportunities. We are writing a list of all the titles, counting daily to see how many we have read and how many more we have to go, and have already made great progress (we are at #26!).  We are quite confident that by the end of our study of bears we will have well surpassed our goal of 30.  We’ll keep you posted on the final count.

NO SCHOOL:  A reminder that there is no school on Friday, April 3rd and Monday, April 6th.  Enjoy the long weekend.

BUSY DAYS AHEAD:  There are many class and school related events coming up in the next few weeks and we will be working with the children to help them prepare and be ready for things such as The TCS Spring Event, IDEA Day (which we will be celebrating for a week), Grandparents and Special Friends Day, our field trip with Reading Buddies to Grass Island, and our PreK Concert - to name just a few!

PREK CONCERT:   Our PreK Concert is fast approaching and the children are busy getting ready for what we are sure will be a wonderful and exciting event for all involved!  Remember that it is on Friday, April 17th and will last about a ½ hour.  We hope to see you there.

TCS AUCTION:SPRING EVENT:  We hope you will be able to attend the TCS Spring Event “The Journey” being held on Saturday, April 25th in Madison, Ct..  These evenings are always great opportunities to have fun, socialize with friends both old and new, and support TCS at the same time.  The entire PreK class will have contributed to the PreK auction item that will be available for you to bid on as well.  Come check it out and bid high!

GRANDPARENTS & SPECIAL FRIENDS DAY:  May 8th will be here sooner than we know it.  Particularly for those who are new to TCS this year, Grandparents & Special Friends Day (GSFD for short) is a very special day for The Country School.  There is a tremendous amount of planning and preparation that takes place behind the scenes to make it a successful and rewarding day for everyone - students and visitors alike.  There are many volunteer opportunities available for parents so please speak up if you are able to help.  Also, please let us (Ms. Hard & Mrs. Halsey) know as soon as possible (either in person, by sending in a little note, or by email) who and how many will be joining your child on that day.  It is imperative that every child have at least one grown-up here so let us know if there are any extenuating circumstances.  We will work something out!

READING BUDDY TALENTS:  After months of watching the Fourth Graders present their talents to their PreK Reading Buddies, it is now time for the PreKers to begin presenting theirs!!!  Each week we will help the children decide which day they will do their talent.  We will then send a note home in their blue bins-a week in advance-to let you know.  Please remember that this is to be a FUN, NON-STRESSFUL activity!  The children can choose to share or talk about a special talent (karate, ballet, gymnastics, soccer, art, music, etc.) or a special interest (trucks, animals, dolls, etc.)  There is no one activity that is preferable over another, there are no minimum time requirements, and we are always right there to help and assist the children in any way possible.  Please feel free to let your child decide and use his or her imagination!  Remember that they are 4 and 5 years old and there is nothing they can do that will be wrong!!!  If you have any questions, thoughts, concerns, or are looking for some suggestions, please let us know.  Remember that you will receive a notice a week before it is your child’s turn to share.
